Over de spreker

Scott Cummings is Robert Henigson Professor of Legal Ethics aan de UCLA School of Law, waar hij onderwijs geeft en publiceert over de juridische professie, juridische ethiek, toegang tot het recht en lokaal bestuursrecht.

Als ontvanger van de UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award is Professor Cummings de oprichtende facultaire directeur van het UCLA Program on Legal Ethics and Democracy, dat empirisch onderzoek en innovatieve programma’s bevordert over de uitdagingen waarmee advocaten in de eenentwintigste eeuw worden geconfronteerd. Daarnaast is hij al lange tijd verbonden aan het UCLA David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy.

In 2021 werd Professor Cummings geselecteerd als Fulbright Distinguished Chair aan het European University Institute en als fellow bij het Stanford Center for the Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences om de rol van advocaten bij het versterken van de rechtsstaat te bestuderen. In 2023 ontving hij een Guggenheim Fellowship om onderzoek te doen naar de rol van advocaten democratic backsliding.

Professor Cummings van april 2025 tot het einde van het academisch jaar 2025–2026 te gast als Distinguished Visiting Professor of Legal Ethics bij het Amsterdam Centre on the Legal Professions and Access to Justice.

Abstract

Scott Cummings will discuss the troubling trend of lawyers as architects of autocracy. His talk will examine how some lawyers, sworn to uphold the rule of law, forge alliances with illiberal movements seeking to dismantle its core features. Drawing on evidence from the first year of the second Trump administration, he will explore specific legal strategies used to capture government lawyers and neutralize the private bar, while considering the degree to which the organized profession and ordinary citizens can protect democracy in perilous times--with lessons for Europe and beyond.
