The lecture focuses on a central tension in legal practice: loyalty and betrayal. As Maizel notes: ''Questions of loyalty and betrayal animate much of legal ethics.'' The relationship of trust between lawyer and client requires complete dedication, but in the context of complex corporate structures, this ideal is not always sustainable.
Elise Maizel's academic work examines the role of the legal profession in corporate governance and misconduct within firms. She focuses on cultural, structural and doctrinal factors that influence the functioning of lawyers and the behavior of firms. Her publications have appeared or are forthcoming in reputable journals such as the Cardozo Law Review, DePaul Law Review, Journal of Corporation Law, UC Law Journal and Yale Journal on Regulation's Notice & Comment.
Prior to her academic career, Maizel worked as litigation counsel at the international law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. There she focused on corporate law, bankruptcy matters, internal investigations and white-collar defense. She also conducted an active pro bono practice in criminal law, including capital defense and compassionate release cases.
